I was speaking of job stuff. Sales has got to be more subjective than what you do (I think) so I'm willing to give a little leeway on folks trying to reinvent the wheel. Personal advice is as subjective as it gets and a whole nother ball of wax...
But, hey, I'm with you on the ranting about personal and work related examples. But, no one tries to school me b/c they have more school than me. So if that happens to you, then I say you are exactly correct. Experience trumps education!

Back to your question about repeating answers: depends on the degree of difficulty.

I have shown some people the steps to blow out and completely rebuild the styles for a table of contents time and time again. Some people don't have the aptitude for that process. I understand that.

If it's something along the lines of "Who do I contact to do _____," darn it. Write my answer down if you are going to bother me again tomorrow.

There are certain business practices that I take as the "common sense" operations that get under my skin. I know it is a bad case when my co-workers begin to be affected. I'm a very early barometer, so when Mrs. Nice gets ticked, then I know I was justified. :)

Ty,

What I was mainly targeting with Rule #2 are those who brazenly come to you with "I have a problem accomplishing what I need to get done. How do I do it, oh guru of all things documents," or something like that. Worse yet, are those who ask about a process and turn around and invent a new process that skips all kinds of checkpoints, thinking they are saving steps.

Maybe following advice outside of the job function is harder to accept, which I have experienced, so maybe I just have blinders on when it comes to work advice.

I often give personal advice when co-workers come to me about life, which I do treat differently and do not get upset when they don't follow my directions. That's their own deal, and does not generally affect the Company.

I'm pretty opinionated, so maybe that came through a bit in this one. It was hard to not turn it into a rant with examples. :) This was an attempt to guide people to gain experience and not throw their education around on those who know their job better.

My question to you is, are you willing to repeat the same advice to the same person? My experience is that I'll give advice, people don't follow it because what I tell them to do is (relatively) hard, and then come back asking the same question again. To which I find myself chanting the original mantra of advice I gave the first time...I don't know. It's kind of funny. You glossed over the part that my experience shows me is the hardest; i.e. Step # 2. I wish it was as simple as you say, but for some reason, to the people I tend to advise, it's not. Another was to say it is that logic and aptitude do not necessarily trump want and comfort. When seeking advice, you may hear something that you don't want to hear. It pushes you outside of your comfort zone to the point that you don't follow the advice you originally sought only to find yourself coming back to the same question. Repeating the advice can be annoying, but, repetition of an idea communicates priority and may create the desired application. Thus making everyone's lives in the office easier.
