Sputnik1Today is the 50th anniversary of the launching of Sputnik 1, the world’s first artificial satellite launched into genocentric orbit. It fueled a lot of fear in the U.S. because they feared the USSR could spy on them because Sputnik was visible with the naked eye. It was a real crisis and really got the Space Race going and fueled the fire of the Cold War.
