American Idol: Top 11 Week – 3/19/2008

I thought it was a pretty good night for most, as far as their vocals are concerned. What is still bugging the crap out of me is everyone’s ineptitude at picking a good song. How can you go into Beatles week and “choose a song from its title” when they are friggin’ Beatles songs?

Who are these people who have never heard of these songs before? They clearly have no idea about the context of the songs, the delight that is the original, and can therefore not make it into their own successfully.

/end rant

Amanda Overmeyer – 7.2

She’s getting pathetic. She reminds me of a smoker who has a raspy cough when they laugh. That’s her singing voice. It works with one kind of song.
Simon says: It was predictable and a mess in parts. It’s the same thing week after week.

Kristy Lee Cook – 9.1

Way better than last week, but still had awkward emotions and notes.
Simon says: I think you need hypnosis. You’re musical wallpaper and a terrible performer.

David Archuleta – 9.8

Remembered his words this week. The vocals were hot!
Simon says: Last week was a complete mess, this week you were amazing. That was master class.

Michael Johns – 9.3

Started pitchy and not connected to the audience.
Simon says: It was a mess. You need to nail a song like David.

Brooke White – 8.6

Good singing, but a tad boring. AGAIN!
Simon says: I thought the performance was terrible. The yellow. The dancing…

David Cook – 9.9

What a rocker! Great everything. He’s going to give Daughtry a run for his money.
Simon says: I don’t think that was as good as you think it was. You’ve lost the element of surprise.

Carley Smithson – 9.8

Terrific vocal ease. She’s either a natural or a very skilled singer.
Simon says: It was an indulgent song choice.

Jason Castro – 9.6

Pretty good vocals. Nice mix on the song.
Simon says: Your face sold that. Unlike some others, you are charming and your goofiness works.

Syesha Mercado – 9.9

Superb vocals and a great mix on the original arrangement. Fantastic!
Simon says: Probably your best performance so far. Great arrangement.

Chikezie Eze – 9.8

What a re-mix! It had a very original fast part. The vocals weren’t as good as last week.
Simon says: It started okay… then you played the harmonica and it turned into Achy Breaky Heart.

Ramiele Malubay – 9.2

Original, good vocals, and a very strange outfit and hat.
Simon says: It sounded like Chikeze was on harmonica. The track sounded amateurish. Wrong song.

Actual prediction: Amanda Overmeyer

  1. So you ranked David Cook and Syesha Mercado the same??? That doesn’t make sense to me. I see where your going with David Cook (I just don’t personally like him)…but Syesha does not have anywhere near the talent of David Cook, or Archuleta for that matter. But she’s gone anyway. Good analysis of Amanda Overmeyer. The judges, as well as the rest of America, were so tired of her.
