The iThemes Advantage

Back to BasicsContinuing my series on forgetting the complicated things of life and reconnecting with what is important, we’re going to discuss the importance of experience. Right off, though, I want to make it clear that I’m not advocating slacking off in school or not going to college in exchange for a job right out of high school. An education is a tool. It especially opens doors that are not accessible to those with only experience. In over two years at my current place of work, I have only seen 2 or 3 jobs out of maybe 150 posted that did not require a 4-year degree and some experience in the field.

On with the topic, then.

Looking for Junk

Posted by: Jesse Petersen | Comments (0)

Today is a rare day where we both have the day off. Actually, I might go into the office later, but first we are going all over the country looking for junk at garage sales and two estate sales. We should be back by lunch, and then we’ll see how I feel about getting 2-3 hours at work to pad my week.

It was a full and fulfilling week at work because of my newest project: upgrading my database to a newer GUI, streamlining the reports, and adding a whole new feature that involved a many-to-one relationship between an established 5,000 record table and a new table that we will be populating with nearly 12,000 data points this week in a major effort to track everything we’ve been tasked with.

We got a big bonus with this month being a 5 Friday month for her paychecks and I have 3 this month. We opened a second savings account that is non-liquid in our minds and our goal is to get the recommended 3 months’ of savings in there. Tuition for the Fall is all settled and I already got my reimbursement for Summer term and bought my books. Technical Writing is just one (expensive) textbook and Modern Short Novel is a textbook, 2 novels, and 2 thick books with many short novels.

Anyway, that’s my life update… real blog content later. Off to shop.

Great Presentations: The Series

Posted by: Jesse Petersen | Comments (1)

Time for a new series. I think I am finding a niche here. :)

I am a big fan of great PowerPoint presentations because of how much I loathe the truly bad ones, particularly the ones that some unnamed departments in my company give. Caffeine, anyone?

So, without further ado, here is one that I have deemed to be excellent. Look for these often.

What did you think of that one? What was awesome and what left you wanting something a little better? I’ll start things rolling in the comments.

I am a long-standing fan of [tag]Scott Adams[/tag]‘ [tag]Dilbert[/tag] and [tag]Gary Larson[/tag]’s [tag]The Far Side[/tag], but after reading [tag]Pearls Before Swine[/tag] by [tag]Stephan Pastis[/tag] for nearly two years, I find myself anticipating each day’s comic more and more.

I really identify with Rat, the egotistical, sadistic character who is bent on making others miserable. I don’t know why, but that’s part of what makes me who I am. Then there are the days I feel like Pig, the down-trodden, non-productive toon. The poor guy is the star of my favorite stips that litter my walls in my cube.

With that said, I am starting my first meme. I want to know what your favorite comic is. Make it good, folks. Don’t worry if it is the same as others’ so long as you say why.

I tag Terry Starbucker, Steve Farber, Phil Gerbyshak, Easton Ellsworth, and Troy Worman. Just link back here and tell everyone why you’re going crazy with a comic post and tag your best friends.
